Praised for her dynamic stage presence and warmly expressive vocalism, Sara Womble is a Boston Lyric Opera Steven and Jane Aiken Emerging Artist alumna, where she made her debut as Barbarina, and covered Susanna, in BLO’s 2017 production of Le nozze di Figaro. Reviews described her performance as “bubbly,” “striking,” “like a charming, bright ray of sunlight,” and possessing “a large sound unexpected in the role.”

During the 2018/19 season, Sara will create the leading role of A Girl in Tod Machover’s Schoenberg in Hollywood, premiering at Boston Lyric Opera in November 2018. She returns to North Carolina Opera in January to sing Frasquita in Carmen, and to BLO in March to sing Lucia in The Rape of Lucretia.

In the summer of 2018, Sara returned to Opera NEO to debut the role of Ilia in Idomeneo. San Diego Story wrote of her performance, “from Ilia’s opera-opening aria ‘Padre, germani, addio,” Sara Womble’s supple, warm soprano immediately won the hearts of the audience.” Reviewing Opera NEO’s opening aria concert, the same publication described her as an “impressive soprano” who “sang ‘Regnava nel silenzio’ from Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, beautifully shaping the composer’s long, undulating lines with deft dynamic shading and shimmering accuracy in those high bel canto leaps.”

Last season, Sara appeared as the Shepherdess in BLO’s Tosca, in which Artsfuse.org wrote that she “made bright, fluent work of the Shepherdess’s song.” She made her debut with North Carolina Opera singing Countess Ceprano in Rigoletto. She also made her North Carolina concert debut as a soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah with the Winston-Salem Symphony.

Other recent engagements include Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro with Point Loma Opera, Zerlina in Don Giovanni as an Apprentice Artist with Opera NEO, and St. Margaret in Honneger’s Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher and Lady Ella in Patience with Odyssey Opera. Sara received her Master’s degree from Boston University, as a student of Sharon Daniels. Her roles at BU included La Fée in Cendrillon, Rosalba in Florencia en el Amazonas, Ruth Baldwin in Later the Same Evening, and Presendia in Dark Sisters.

Before her singing career, Sara graduated Phi beta kappa and Magna cum laude from Duke University, where she double-majored in English and Vocal Performance. It was during her time at Duke, thanks to encouragement from beloved teachers, professors, and coaches, that she found that her studies merged seamlessly into her creative life as a writer, singer, and scholar. During her senior year, she wrote and performed an honors thesis on the feminist undertones in Franz Liszt’s O quand je dors, which was awarded highest distinction.

“Soprano Sara Womble is a compelling stage presence and brought spirit and wit to the role of Susanna. Vocally, she was perhaps the best-suited to the repertoire, with a warm, clear tone, buoyancy and agility of delivery, with impressive execution of arpeggios and cadenzas.”
